Washington (Pajhwok): The United States on Friday warned Pakistan has weeks and months to deliver on its specific asks with regard to fighting against terrorism and bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table.

“And if they don’t, …we’ll adjust accordingly,” acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs and acting Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Alice G Wells said.

Wells, who was part of the US delegation Secretary of State Rex Tillerson led to the region, issued the warning at a news conference.

In Pakistan, she said, Tillerson had “an extremely candid conversation” with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the civilian and military leadership team.

Tillerson called the new US strategy an opportunity as Pakistan, with the exception of Afghanistan, had the most to benefit from a stable and peaceful country next door.

“But under the strategy, we’ve laid out some very specific expectations of how Pakistan can help create the conditions that will help bring the Taliban to the table. And I think the longstanding relationships with the militant and terrorist organisations – our concern is that they threaten Pakistan’s stability,” Wells said.

She added the secretary stressed the importance of Pakistan moving quickly to demonstrate good faith and efforts to use its influence to create the conditions that would get the Taliban to the negotiating table.

“We look forward over the next weeks and months to see practical steps that Pakistan takes out of self-interest and ensuring that its own country is not destabilised by the groups that have been able to use its territory.”

Wells believed the Taliban leadership and the Haqqani Network retained the ability to plan, recuperate and to reside with their families in Pakistan. The Quetta and Peshawar leadership councils of the Taliban had their names for a reason, she argued.

“What we saw in 2014 was Pakistan’s strategic decision to defeat the terrorist groups that were targeting the government. And with great loss of life, great courage, great vision about what needed to be done, Pakistan has fought that battle and now has regained control and sovereignty over FATA,” she said.

“We’d like to see the same strategic commitment brought against other militant groups, whether they’re operating or have used Pakistan’s territory, whether they are directed against India or directed against Afghanistan,” she said.

The American diplomat said the Trump administration had made specific asks of the Pakistanis.

President Ghani and his team had put forward the initiative of the Kabul compact and specific reform, she acknowledged, saying they met regularly to evaluate the reform initiatives.
