KABUL (Pajhwok): A high school teacher in eastern Nangarhar province is being referred to judicial organs for severely beating a student, an official said on Wednesday.

Shokrullah, a student at the state-run Abdul Wakil High School in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital, was hospitalized after being beaten up by a teacher, Qari Lutful Haq, to the point of unconsciousness.

Shokrullah’s brother told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident occurred during recess break. “As the recess finished, students returned to their classes; but some students were making noise in class 12th. Qari Lutful Haq entered the class and started beating Shokrullah and other students.”

He said Haq used punches and kicks until his brother fell unconscious. “My brother was then taken to hospital by classmates. My brother’s condition is not good. He vomits frequently and falls unconscious. His head has swollen. We don’t have enough money to take him to Pakistan for treatment.”

The brother asked the officials concerned to investigate the issue.  Nangarhar education department spokesman, Asif Shinwari, confirming the incident, said it was a tragic event and a blow to teachers’ reputation.

He said the victim was first evacuated to a private hospital and then to a public hospital by the school’s principal and handed over to his family after treatment.

Shinwari said the student was said to be stable now and a team had been tasked to investigate the matter. He added the incident would be officially reported to all education department agencies in a written form as warning to other teachers not to commit such acts.

The incident at Abdul Wakeel high school drew harsh criticism from social media users. A civil society activist, Omarkhel, on his Facebook denounced the act by Nangarhar teacher and called for serious investigations.

Another critic, Shir Ali, said the teacher in question did not possess characteristics of a teacher because teachers didn’t do such things in today’s world.
