KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Two drug traffickers carrying more than 800 kilograms of opium have been arrested by police in central Bamyan province, the Ministry of Interior said on Wednesday.

Lt. Gen. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi, deputy counter-narcotics head at the MoI, today a press conference here that the drug traffickers were en-route to Kabul from Sighan district of Bamyan when they were detained by police.

The two had skillfully placed the 800kg of opium in a vehicle and wanted to shift the drugs to southern Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

Ahmadi identified the two as Mohammad Agha, hailing from Kandahar, and Abdulahad, a resident of western Ghorinfo-icon province.

Ahamdi called the third quarter of the solar yearinfo-icon 1395 as a drug trafficking season in the country.

“We are making efforts to detect drug trafficking gangs and mafia especially those active in Helmand and Kandahar and arrest them.”

He claimed heroin processing and producing centres had been shifted to southwestern parts of the country and to the Afghanistaninfo-icon-Pakistaninfo-icon border.

Current year 60 percent of drugs produced in northeastern zone of Afghanistan had been seized during their transfer to other provinces, he added.

He said this year the anti-poppy drive was lukewarm compared to previous years because of insecurity and the cultivation took place in insecure provinces.
