LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least seven fighters and a policeman were killed in a coordinated attack by militants on the Greshk district centre of southe Helmand province on Wednesday, officials said.
Military operations chief, Abdul Jabbar Qahraman, told Pajhwok Afghan News a group of 10 militants launched a group attacks on a number of govement buildings in Greshk early in the moing.
He said three of the attackers entered into the education
office building and several others sneaked into a four-storey private building,from where they are firing at the police headquarters and National Directorate of Security (NDS
) office.
Seven of the attackers have been killed so far, according to Qahraman, who said insurgents were still firing at govement offices from the private building they had entered.
Only one Afghan Local Police (ALP) official was killed and two others were wounded in the clashes, he said, adding they were carefully advancing to prevent civilian casualties.
A policeman, who wished not to be named, said the militants had come to the district bazaar on motorcycles. They started indiscriminate fire soon after entering the buildings.
As usual, the Taliban
claimed responsibility for the assault, which is still ongoing. However, the rebel group said nothing about casualties.
